Welcome

2019 NWLA Tournament Registration

As we plan for the 2019 NWLA Tournament, we would like to remind everyone of the following:

- The 2019 NWLA Tournament will take place July 12-14, 2019, at Wakefield Park in Morenci, MI.

- There will not be a regional round this year. In it’s place, the NWLA National Tournament will feature 20 teams in 2019! The 13 qualifiers from 2018 will be automatically included in the field, and then 7 other applicants will be selected from the field. A new format will be released in the near future, but it will feature elimination after Pool Play. Stay tuned for more on this.

- The 2019 NWLA Tournament is now accepting applications from fall and winter leagues! As long as your league starts after the end of the last NWLA Tournament, you’ll be eligible for the next year’s Tournament. NOTE: If you have a fall season and a spring/summer season, you won’t be able to use both for eligibility. You can decide which one you’d like to use, and all eligibility will be determined from that season.

Dates for 2018 Set: News and Notes from Host Committee

The NWLA Tournament Host Committee met to kick off the planning stage of the 2018 NWLA Tournament, with the topics ranging from official dates to player movement. We’re rolling out a few changes for 2018.

The official dates of the 2018 NWLA National Tournament will be July 13-15, 2018. The Tournament will return to Morenci, Michigan after a successful first year in its’ new home.

The 2018 NWLA Regional Tournament will be held on June 9-10, 2018, at a location to be determined. The Host Committee will begin taking applications to host the Regional round after the New Year. A Regional site will be selected in late March. Team applications for the Tournament will also be available after the New Year, with a due date set in April. The team fee for this year will be $300, with $150 being returned if you do not make the National Tournament.

The final point of emphasis is player movement. In order to preserve the Tournament’s identity as being a showcase of great NWLA Leagues across the country, we have decided to take the following steps regarding player movement:

• Any player who played in the 2017 Tournament that wishes to change league affiliation must sit out one (1) year.
• In certain cases (moving cities etc.) a player will be permitted to change league affiliation without sitting out a year, however, they must go through an appeal process. Under this process, the Host Committee shall determine whether or not the case is valid. If the player’s previous league is still active, the player must also receive permission from the league.
• In the case of a league folding, the players from said league do not need to sit out a year if they join another league.

Bloomsburg Wiffle Club Out of Regional, Schedule and Rules Posted

The Bloomsburg Wiffle Club will not be attending the 2018 NWLA Tournament Regional Round, so the Regional schedule has been modified. The format will be exactly the same as last year’s Regionals, with four preliminary games (generated by the live draft and a random scheduler) and a bracket. After the preliminaries, the top three teams will be qualified for Nationals, while the remaining four teams will be seeded and placed into the single elimination bracket to decide the fourth and final spot in Morenci!

The rules committee met Sunday, June 3rd, and adopted the 2018 rules.

  • Final Adopted Rules [ pdf ]

Only two changes were made. A baserunner inadvertently leaving the base will be given one warning per team per game before being called out. Also, the lead force and batter-runner will now be the only players affected by the force out rule. All other force outs will not be considered.

Play begins at 9 am on Saturday, with the bracket play taking place under the lights! Currently, the weather looks iffy, so the schedule can be condensed to fit around any delays we may have. We WILL play through rain as long as the conditions are deemed safe and competitive. Updates and live streams will be provided through the NWLA Tournament Twitter and Facebook!

Regional Format and Rules Call Information

The Regional Round of the 2018 NWLA Tournament presented by Visit Lenawee is less than a month away and we have some news and notes:

-*Rules Call:* This year’s Rules Call will be hosted by the Organizing Committee at 6 PM Eastern on June 3rd, 2018. As a reminder, one member of each league will be able to vote on rule changes, with the exception of news teams (Bloomsburg Wiffle Club). An email has been sent to all managers opening the floor for proposals, and all proposals MUST BE LISTED ON THE EMAIL CHAIN. If a proposal is not listed on the chain, it will not be voted on.

-*Regional Format:* With 8 teams battling for 4 spots in Morenci, the Regional format will be 2 pools of 4 teams each. Teams will play each of their pool members once. The winner from each pool will be qualified for Nationals. The pool tiebreaker will be head-to-head, followed by run differential, runs allowed, and runs scored. The remaining 6 teams will then be seeded and placed into a bracket, where the 3rd and 4th place teams from pool play will receive byes. The winners of the second round games will also be qualified for Nationals. The losing team from the 2 second round games will then play a final game to determine who will be the first alternate. Pitching rules will be the same as the National round, with the rule resetting after pool play, as well as before the first alternate game.

To add a new wrinkle into the Regional round, the pools will be determined by the teams themselves! Organizing Committee member Carl Coffee will be holding a live lottery on Sunday, May 20th to pick two teams, then each team will draft their pool from the remaining teams. The first team selected in the lottery will get the first pick in each round. The schedules will then be determined as follows:

1 – Lottery Winner
2 – First Round Pick
3- Second Round Pick
4- Third Round Pick

1v2
4v3
3v1
2v4
1v4
2v3

Player Transfer Rule Update

The Host Committee hosted an open forum on Monday for commissioners to voice their opinions on the new player transfer rules. We’d like to thank those who participated and have taken their thoughts into account. Given this, and various discussions within the Host Committee, we have come up with the following decision:

The Host Committee has decided to delay the new Player Transfer rule, scheduled to begin this year, until the 2019 NWLA Tournament. All player movements for this year will be allowed, as long as that player meets the regular player requirements set forth by the Committee. The Committee feels the rule holds up as it stands, however, the implementation was rushed. This move will give teams a chance to get things together this year, as well as figure out future plans.

We apologize to anyone this may have affected. We realize that a late decision on this is not ideal, and for that reason, have extended the application deadline to May 1st. Please feel free to reach out to the Host Committee for further discussion on the topic.

Indianapolis Set to Host 2018 NWLA Tournament Regional Round on June 9th

The NWLA Tournament Organizing Committee has selected Indianapolis, IN as the host of the 2018 Regional Round! The Committee felt that given the location and strong application submitted by Indy Southside Wiffle Ball, they would be the best selection for the Regional Round. The Dirtyard, which has been newly renovated for 2018, will play host to its’ first NWLA Tournament games on June 9th, 2018. A Regional format and schedule will be listed at a later date.

The Committee would also like to thank the other applicants. We had a great turnout this year and had a difficult decisions to make.

As a reminder, April 1st is the deadline for teams to apply AND pay the $300 entry fee for inclusion in the Tournament for 2018. And another reminder, if you go to Regionals and do not make Nationals, you will be refunded $150.

See you in Indianapolis!
