Team Profile

Columbus, Ohio, of course, is perhaps best known nationally as the home of Andrew J. Ginther, Columbus City Council President.

But that is changing with the National Wiffle League Association (NWLA)'s annual wiffle ball tournament, which has seen its popularity grow like Michael Moore's gut at an all-you-can-eat IHOP.

The NWLA Tournament will be held July 18 - July 20, in Columbus, Ohio.

In the 1960s, when wiffle balls were made of leather and the players were fat, the NWLA could only get players to play in the tournament by offering free go-carts with beer carriers to help everyone get around the bases or chase after foul balls after the grueling first 3 minutes of play ...

Those days are gone, receding like Columbus Councilman Hearcel F. Craig's hairline. The NWLA tournament has gone big time and attracts some of the best players from around the country -- even from here, in New York, where most people don't really know much about Ohio. (When told the tournament was in Ohio, Jay Mattice initially declined, noting he didn't have a passport.) But whatever. HV_WBL is happy to be a part of this great tournament, wherever it is.

(Ed. fact check: According to Wikipedia, Ohio is a part of the United States. And it's not even really that close to Africa.)

And sure, while some writer at NWLA says he doesn't take our league seriously, we hope to change his mind with our play ... and if that doesn't work, we will provide him with a free case of beer. So take note, NWLA writer!

Kidding aside, the NWLA annual national tournament is without question the premier wiffle ball tournament in the country. The NWLA brings together the world of competitive wiffle leagues from all over the country. This three-day extravaganza continues to grow as 16 leagues are participating this year.

To run the team, Commissioner David Grogan did the smart thing and made sure he was not in any kind of leadership role. Instead, he put perrenial MVP candidate Kris Morse of the Highland Redbirds in charge, and Morse initially elected to go with future hall of famer's Drew van der Poel and Chris Spinelli as part of the team.

However it was not meant to be as van der Poel and Spinelli backed out because they were scheduled to help volunteer at several charitable institutions this July. "Can you believe these guys?!?!" said Morse incredulously at a news conference in front of Grogan's house that no one attended. "Oh hey Dave, I am informing the Hudson Valley of the upcoming trip to Ohio. Figured we were on the same page by doing it right here on your front porch."

As the sounds of police sirens nearing Grogan's palatial estate grew louder, the Commish said, "Get off my property Morse, before I call high school John Geller from his world wide rock and roll tour to remove you." Grogan then asked Morse if he wouldn't mind running to Stewart's to pick him up a milk shake as he had just given his butler and entire serving staff the day off. "I can't imagine what I was thinking, don't you hate it when your butler and serving staff are off on the same day?" He then chortled the way most rich folk do.

"Uh, yeah, of course, I hate it when that happens," Morse said, rolling his eyes. He then eyed Grogan's mansion. "I thought you said you put the registration fees back into the league."

Anyways ... after an exhausted search that led Morse through a jungle, Geller's apartment, rain forest and volcano (only upon the exit of the volcano, which actually was in Geller's apartment, did he remember he could only choose players from within the league).... Ladies and Gentleman, here is your 2014 Hudson Valley River Monster's NWLA tournament roster. Drum roll please. I think the Hudson Valley area should be excited about their chances in Ohio. Regardless of what goes down, this could be the biggest thing to happen in the Valley since the attack upon West Point during the Civil War.
